7 questions to Claudia, the founder of Eliv Rosenkranz, about wholesale partnerships and behind-the-scenes insights.

1. What inspired you to start Eliv Rosenkranz, and how did you get into the handmade paper industry?

Approximately seven years ago, Instagram was a major source of inspiration for me. At that time, I ordered handmade paper from America for my calligraphy work, and when I finally received it, I fell in love with it immediately. I still have some sheets of that paper and treasure them dearly. As one thing led to another, I shifted my focus from calligraphy to the paper business.

2. How do you choose which wholesale partners to work with, and what qualities do you look for in a potential partner?

At Eliv Rosenkranz, anyone who runs a business can currently apply to become a wholesale partner, and as long as we have the capacity, that won't change. A wholesale partner at Eliv Rosenkranz should possess a heart full of passion for handmade paper. Anyone who has worked with handmade paper knows that it can be frustrating at times, even though we do our best to overcome any difficulties with our quality. It remains a handmade product, and every sheet is unique. This often requires extra steps. However, our wholesale partners are willing to go the extra mile because they know that the result will be beautiful, unique and special. They can convey this passion and enthusiasm to their customers and inspire them along the way.

3. What are some of the biggest challenges that come with running a business focused on handmade paper products, and how do you overcome them?

The biggest challenge has been, and continues to be, maintaining and improving quality. When making paper, there are many chemical processes involved that we sometimes need to observe, discover, and then change or perhaps not change at all. A significant milestone was the pigment change in 2021. This allowed us not only to create more consistent colors, but also to switch to more environmentally friendly eco-pigments. Every challenge has a silver lining, even if it's not immediately apparent.

The second major challenge is the logistics behind the business: how many colors should we offer? What formats? How much can be stored? What can be produced when? Long-time customers have accompanied us through many processes, and I believe that through good customer communication and listening to the needs of both customers and employees, we have been able to create a solid foundation. We will likely continue to go through processes, and I am excited to see what else is yet to come.

4. Can you give us an example of a particularly successful partnership with one of your wholesale partners, and what made it successful?

That is a difficult question to answer, as we have many dream clients, and each relationship is exciting and enriching. What all successful partnerships have in common is good communication. As it is an online business, and we cannot meet our customers face-to-face, sometimes things can get lost in translation. If customers do not reach out to us, we do not know what we can improve, change, produce or how we can help. Through communication, we have been able to achieve a lot together!

The second commonality is mutual appreciation. Our customers give us so much gratitude and that motivates us to keep going even during tough times. Similarly, we love it when our customers share their results with us. Currently, this exchange primarily happens on Instagram, but also through submissions via post or email.

5. How does Eliv Rosenkranz ensure consistent quality across all of its products, especially when working with different suppliers or materials

Our raw materials and other additives are delivered once a year for the next 14 months. This allows us to guarantee the same raw materials and additives for at least this period, which is crucial for our product.

After the paper is produced and dried, it is handled at least four times by different employees and sorted at each step according to our quality criteria: color, shape, unwanted impurities, and grammage. Then the paper is counted in batches of 20 before being packaged.

Since this year, Eliv Rosenkranz has had a dedicated Quality Manager who also works in production. This enables continuous observation and immediate action if something goes wrong during production or if changes occur. We use various tools and protocols to try to produce the paper as consistently as possible. However, it remains a handmade product that we always keep in mind.

We do not work in a sterile environment, and no matter how clean we work, dust particles may still appear on or within the paper, which should not be seen as a decrease in quality. Similarly, grammage and color cannot be held as consistently as with machines.

We do our best to produce a consistent product that does not lose the charm of being handmade.

6. In what ways does Eliv Rosenkranz prioritize sustainability and eco-friendliness in its operations and product offerings?

Sustainability has been important to me from the beginning, which is not easy when starting a production that goes beyond one's own needs. It starts with the selection of raw materials, manufacturing and processing, packaging of the product, safe packaging of the package, and transportation to your home. Here are some points we value greatly:

We use water as often as possible and in a resource-saving manner.

• Our packing material is mostly made exclusively from paper and cardboard, which are fully biodegradable.
• We only use air cushions if high-priced content has a long journey ahead or if it is being sent to a country with very high humidity (thanks to a tip from a customer).
• All our raw materials are from Europe, with short transport routes meaning reduced emissions.
• We use eco-friendly and sustainable pigments that have several eco-conscious certificates.
• Waste paper is first used as an adhesive underlay for us before being disposed of.
• Protective films for our cards and stationery sets are made of cellophane, biodegradable, and compostable.

7. Finally, can you share any exciting new developments or projects that Eliv Rosenkranz has in store for the near future?

This year will be colorful! After doing only a few color experiments last year, I want to give my creativity and experimental spirit more space this year and produce completely new colors for the planned experiment bundles. For the first bundle sale, I was already experimental and mixed a purple - admittedly, I'm not a big fan of purple, but the result made me very happy. I really like it!

In addition, we have introduced a new category: Limited Collection. Unfortunately, we can only keep a few colors permanently in stock in multiple formats, which is covered by our Basic Collection. In the Limited Collection, colorful colors are allowed to move in certain formats and limited quantities.
