Understanding the Art of Hot Foil Stamping on Handmade Paper

Hot foil printing, also known as hot foil stamping, is a process where a design or text is applied to a surface using heat and pressure. This method is commonly used for enhancing printed materials such as books, packaging, labels, and promotional items, giving them a high-quality and appealing appearance. But above all, hot foil printing is becoming increasingly popular for wedding invitations. It adds an unparalleled touch of elegance to wedding stationery and highlights the significance of the upcoming celebration, making it an ideal choice for couples looking to create memorable invitations that reflect the specialness of their event.

Exploring the Hot foil Printing Process: From Design to Finishing Touches

Follow along as we Break Down the Hot foil Printing Process, providing a brief overview:

Preparation of the design: Firstly, a magnesium plate is created from the desired design. The design is created in mirror image as it should appear in the correct orientation later.

Loading of hot stamping foil: The hot stamping foil is attached to the machine. This foil consists of a carrier layer and a thin layer of special colors or metals that represent the desired design.

Magnesium Plate Attachment: Before heating, the magnesium plate is affixed to the platen.

Heating of the platen: The hot stamping foil is positioned between a heated platen and the surface onto which the design will be transferred. The platen is heated to a specific temperature sufficient to melt the color layer of the foil.

Application of pressure and heat: Once the foil and the plate are ready, the stamping process begins. The handmade paper is properly positioned in the machine and then guided to the heated platen, where heat and pressure are applied to the foil. This causes the color layer of the foil to melt and transfer onto the surface of the paper. Depending on the pressure, a slight embossing may also occur.

Cooling and detachment: After the design has been transferred to the surface, the hot stamping foil cools down, allowing the melted material to solidify and adhere to the surface. Then, the foil is peeled away from the surface, leaving the design behind.

Quality control and finishing: Once the hot foil printing process is complete, the result is checked for quality and completeness. Any necessary finishing touches are made to ensure that the design meets the requirements.

These are the basic steps in the hot foil printing process. The exact details may vary depending on the machine configuration and the specific requirements of the printing project.

Let's delve into their wisdom and expertise:

What is your experience with hot foil stamping on handmade paper and how it enhances the overall look of wedding stationery?

María: Handmade paper in general, when combined appropriately, contributes to the romantic vibe that many couples are looking for when thinking of their wedding stationery. Foil printing elevates the pieces to a whole different level, creating outstanding results. When looking for wedding stationery that really stands out, handmade paper and foil printing are a perfect match to consider.

Mia: Foil on handmade paper is one of the most special looks within exclusive invitations. And this is certainly not without reason. There is a lot of work and experience behind this printing technique and handmade paper. Both in the choice of paper manufacturer, and in the choice of foil, printing press, printing plates, temperature, packing and dwell time. I am sure mastering all this  can be seen in the results of the final product. Making it even more special.

Delphine: My experience overall with this technique on this paper is beautiful. It definitely gives a luxury and still modern-vintage look that I feel nothing else does.

What are the key principles and techniques involved in hot foil stamping on handmade paper?

Delphine: First of all, making sure we are working with a regular thickness through each sheet of paper, so that we avoid failed printing (to deep printing, "burned" look, etc).
I always make sure that all the sheets are organized together by thickness and size so I can adjust my press for each pack of paper sheets.

María: I'd say the key to achieving the best results when foil printing on handmade paper is the materials used, mainly the quality of the foils and handmade paper. In this sense, Eliv Rosenkranz's paper is perfect to work with: it has this smooth texture which helps enormously to get even impressions, and its certain weight and composition help get this beautiful depth impression that adheres perfectly to the paper when setting up the press and temperature correctly.

Mia: Here is my list of things to consider when printing with hot foil on handmade paper:

THE PAPER - far from all handmade paper is suitable for printing on, especially not if you want a professional expression. Although hot foil stamping on handmade paper is one of the most difficult combinations to master, the paper from Eliv Rosenkranz makes the process much smoother.

THE FOIL - choose a foil manufacturer that has a wide selection of foil types. All manufacturers have their own indication of the foil type, so if you choose a new manufacturer, you need to familiarize yourself with their types. Tell your foil manufacturer what you need to print on and which machine you use, they often offer small rolls of foil samples so you can test whether their foil works for your handmade paper, and some also help with suggesting heat degrees. My favorite at the moment is undoubtedly Foilco and a local Danish manufacturer. Foilco is UK based and has an absolutely fantastic foil portfolio with colours, shine, microstructure and endless possibilities. They very likely always have a foil type that suits your project. My favorite foils from Foilco for use on handmade paper are currently DR and SH. What you should be asking and looking for is a foil with ‘easy release’, meaning that the film comes off easily with low temperatures.

THE TEMPERATURE - depends on the foil type and the printing press, but usually somewhere between 100-125 degrees Celsius. If you find that the foil does not stick to the paper, it could be, among other things, that the temperature is wrong.

THE DIE - I have had great success with both magnesium and brass dies for printing on handmade paper. Brass is better at distributing the heat in the pressure plate, but the cheaper option, magnesium, often does the work just fine.

MAKE - READY - the material behind your paper can also make a difference for a great result. I often use regular printing paper combined with a soft and thicker cotton stock, to both get a good foil coverage and also an impression into the paper.

THE DWELL TIME - The dwell time is also a factor in getting the most crisp foil coverage. 0.5-2 secs is my preferred dwell time. If the paper needs longer, you should often go back and adjust the temperature a bit. Emergency tip if everything else goes wrong: fasten the paper and, run the paper twice!

What types of foils and colours work best for achieving a luxurious and shiny or matt finish in foil stamping?

Mia: ‘Easy release’ foils when working with handmade paper. I have been in love with a cold, matt gold foil for a while now, as I really like the subtle, yet elegant look the handmade paper gets with this combination. Both Eliv's paper colours: White, Wheat, Pale Blush and Clay look lovely with the matt gold foil.

María: When it comes to foil printing, most people tend to think about metallic and shiny foils (mainly golds, which are the most popular ones), but foil printing can also be done with matt-colored finishes, which I particularly love to use. Here's an example of a beautiful moonlight blue color, opaque in design and characteristic. All kinds of foils - metallics, pigments, holographic, etc. can help get that luxurious look when used adequately. The key again here is using the best possible materials.

Tips and Considerations for Using Hot Foil Stamping on Handmade Paper

Can you offer any tips or tricks for designers who are new to hot foil stamping and want to incorporate it into their wedding stationery designs?

Delphine: Making sure the final design has a nice detailed look, but also taking in consideration that a design too detailed might not give the best look! I'm giving a tip here that I have sometimes myself trouble following - and that's probably why I know it so well - having in mind that the press is hot and that "burning" or giving a "melting look" comes easily, especially at first when we are getting used to the press, so simple designs are the best to start.

Mia: Start small, like a monogram or a little illustration. The smaller the design, the bigger chances are or a successful hot foil stamping and you successfully starting your hot foil stamping on handmade paper Journey :)

María: Foil printing on handmade paper is certainly a challenge and will take quite some time to get it right, so the first one would be: don't despair! One of the main struggles can be setting the press adequately, and detecting the right temperature is key to achieving the best results. You should try up and down until you get the exact celsius or centigrade degree that gets the best printing result for your card. And that involves considering that extra paper for those try-and-error tests will be needed. I'd suggest having a minimum of an extra 20% of the paper for any project with foil printing on handmade paper. You should be prepared to repeat some of them. Small plates make it easier to get a more even impression, so for beginners I'd recommend getting familiar with the process with one of those rather than starting with a big one.

Also, and this is not a proper tip, but probably the most helpful recommendation: invest in a good foil printing course. A foil printing machine is a significant investment, so it is worth it to do what it gets to obtain the best results and master the technique. When thinking of foil printing training, two good courses come to my mind: The Art of Foil Press Printing by Nat Otálora and Cultivé No. 02. A stationer's guide to foil printing and handmade paper, by Shasta Bell and Mikyla Marie Manu. I took the first one, and it helped tremendously to get familiar with the process and learn all the tips and tricks to make the most of my press, which, of course, took time and effort. It's an investment that, for me, is worth every dollar.

How do you choose the right combination of handmade paper and foil colours to create a harmonious and visually appealing effect?

Delphine: I work on a digital mockup first so that I can visualize the final look before I go ahead. It's all about color combination and there is nothing (to me) that helps me better but to place all the materials in front of my eyes before I make a decision. If I have all the materials in hand perfect, if not, then I create it on my computer so that I can decide.

Stunning Examples of Foil-Stamped Wedding Stationery on Handmade Paper

What do you believe makes hot foil stamping a standout choice for adding a touch of elegance to wedding stationery?

Delphine: The shiny look of it, definitely!

María: Foil is a printing technique that elevates the look of any piece that it's applied to. The characteristic depth impression, combined with that unique shiny finish that only a foil press printing can achieve, automatically gets that sense of classic luxurious look that goes so well with wedding stationery. And when printing on handmade paper, the impact doubles. The same goes for a matte or colored finish: these beautiful depth impressions achieved with this artisan printing method are unique and really remarkable and add a touch of elegance to wedding stationery.

Could you describe a specific project where you used hot foil stamping on handmade paper to add elegance to wedding stationery? What design elements did you incorporate?

María: For a recent invitation suite, fully foil printed with colored foil, I decided to highlight and give (even) more prominence to the main Invitation Card by choosing handmade paper for it. By doing so, I looked to incorporate a subtle and delicate piece that helped get the romantic vibe I was looking for. The result turned out to be one of my recent favorite projects.

Delphine: Oh yes, so many times!! I absolutely love one project where I used an Eliv R. Sage DL Sheet to make a details card, and foil it with shiny gold. It was gorgeous. I absolutely adore using soft color handmade paper and gold foil printing; I feel like it's so romantic and soft.

Do you notice a significant transformation in the final look and feel of wedding stationery projects when clients opt for hot foil stamping on handmade paper?

Delphine: I see this anytime one of my clients choose to go for a semi-custom design of mine. Sometimes they prefer it in digital printing, and some other times I get to print them in foil on handmade paper. I can tell it looks like a totally different invitation suite! And it actually is, even though the design doesn't change.
